![]() ![]() The timeline for the whole book stretches credulity a bit, although whether you could call it a realistic book in the first place is a bit of a toss-up. I think it could have done with slowing down at points and taking a breather now and again. It’s also incredibly fast-paced, sometimes excessively so. It’s part romance, part thriller, part comedy, and there’s definitely tension between those things at times. But he’s also funny, and brave, and empathetic most of the time. And there are worse protagonists to be up-close and personal with for a ride like this! He’s impulsive, and frequently makes rash (or downright awful) decisions that he probably should have avoided. The story is told in first-person, present tense, so you’re right in Connor’s head for the whole story. Surrender Your Sons, by Adam Sass, is an intense and unrelenting ride. He just has to keep his head long enough to get to the bottom of it all. Secrets which, if they got out, could bring the whole operation tumbling down. There, Connor will discover that Nightlight has some seedy secrets of his own. Desperate to get Connor to change his ways, his mum has him spirited away to Nightlight, a conversion camp on a secluded island. She’s deep into the church in their small town in Illinois, and she’s also convinced his gayness is a way of shirking responsibility for his ex-girlfriend’s baby. Connor Major came out to his mum this summer, and it was a disaster. ![]()
